1 What are you playing right now? on Thu Sep 07, 2017 8:00 am

Just a nice little general topic where we can talk what we're enjoying at the moment Wink

So far for me I'm juggling a little bit. I'm recording voice-overs for my God of War PAIN run when I have the time (still have a few hours to go) and doing a Devil's Third Hardcore-difficulty run (I doubt many even know it exists as it is so well hidden). Aside from that mostly Yakuza: Kiwami. Though unfair most of the time it is clicking with me more and more and I'm considering doing a Handicap Run for it. Who knows! When I'm relaxing I'm playing Life is Strange which I got for free with PSN+. I dropped Evil Within for now as it is a bit too stressful for me and honestly the long stealth-segment in Chapter 2 is turning me off a bit. It was fine on Normal but on Nightmare there are so many it's a bit annoying. I might continue it later though.

So what are you guys up to?

I've got two characters on Absolver. One for kickboxing the other TKD. Just going around learning suitable moves and the occasional PvP.

Alternating between this and Batman Arkham Asylum, but to be honest I probably won't stay on one thing for too long. A bad habit I need to break.

Really enjoying Asylum far more than the others. I love the level design. Has a really creepy vibe to it at times. The combat has some cool things that only Asylum has (I have barely touched Knight) like the throw special moves and triple batclaw.

I too really liked Arkham and just how well structured it was. Really felt like a comicbook the most and the way it was all handled was just perfectly done. It is the game that got me into comicbooks so that says something. Knight has the best and most indepth combat though, it can get pretty intense especially when playing as the well designed characters. Batgirl is severely gimped but characters like Robin and Nightwing are an absolute joy to play.

Getting more and more inclined to try out Absolver but going to wait it out a bit more.

I'll get Knight at some point then.

Yeah best wait until they fix these bugs or maybe a price drop.

I've been playing ninja gaiden 2 on warrior mode. Just before that I beat ninja gaiden sigma on normal for the 2nd time. Can't remember what I was playing just before haha. I'm thinking of playing fear1 again.
Might buy super hot for PS4 and Titanfall 2 if it's on sale.

I usually like to play 2 games at a time, usually an action game generally and a shooter of some kind, maybe one will be 1st person and the other 3rd person. Gonna play my spooky bang bangs(spooky shooters like re4/dead space/maybe EW1) and maybe some other spooky themed games in time for EW2 since that's October(I like themed months).

I liked asylums design also, city is really good too and I think it did the open world best since it was themed better and more densely packed than origins or knight which went way overboard with the sandbox size. Knight was all shiny and new it lost the dark comic grit of asylum and city.

I didn't mind the open world in City. It made sense because that's what Batman is actually like, batclaw and gliding was fun, and dropping down on a group of thugs and having them all scream with fear felt great. It just didn't add a whole lot is all.

Still prefer Asylum's design though. Need to make topic.

I saw you mention your devils third gameplay in a god of war vid recently, I was gonna ask if you would be playing it so good to know. I'm playing fear1 now along with ng2. I don't know if fear1's frame rate is dodgy or not on 360(I think it's 30fps), having fun anyway it's a big favourite of mine.

Was just playing some Absolver pvp. Got put in an arena where you can fall off the edges and this giy immediately ran off three times giving me the victory.

I rematched and he did it again. It was then I realized he was level 60 (max) and was purposely doing this to boost me. Went from level 5 to 30 super fast before he logged off.

I read up on this and it's a thing a lot of people do. Find a buddy and just kill yourself in a match continously. Pvp gives far more exp that regular enemies, like thousands more.

So Knack 2 was accidentally listed as 'free' on the NZ PSN recently. I got it and assuming a few others did. The first game wasn't very popular so it probably wasn't too many. The problem has since been fixed and it looks like there's no way they can void our free copy.

Knack 2 is actually a decent action platformer. It's got this weird charm to it I can't quite explain.

11 Re: What are you playing right now? on Tue Sep 12, 2017 11:59 am

I heard about that too but didn't get it while it lasted sadly, that said it looked interesting. Sort of a platformer with combat mechanics it looked like? It really is this weird little IP for me since Sony really was trying to make it the next big thing but I didn't even know a sequel was in the works until I heard of the free-leak on the NZ-psn. Bizarre.

Yeah it's really surprising they made a sequel.

Yeah it has combat. Basic, but reasonably fun. Knack 2 added much more like like skill trees. You can also block now and parry projectiles back at enemies.

There are a lot of new attacks. The first game only had a 3 hit punch, jump attack and a dodge attack. Now there are new air attacks, ones where you hold the button down (and can be linked to your basic 3 hit), and two button attacks.

The dodge move is a dash and can be upgraded to add an attack on the end or to go through enemies and get behind them.

Almost all of Knack's attacks can be cancelled with a dodge or jump at ANY part of their animation which is super useful.

Attacks have upgrades that make them faster and stronger. There's also a grab attack from long range where his arm extends and pulls the enemy in for free hits. Doesn't work on armored enemies (but you can break armor and then it's fine) or huge robots.

They've made quite a few changes that I don't like though. The first game was actually quite hard at times and you'd take huge damage. On very hard you were dead in one hit most of the time.

Now they've added in all these casual elements (though I'm playing on normal) like special moves are completely different now. In K1, you built meter by collecting sunstone crystals and defeating enemies, then you activated super mode and pressed the command for the move you wanted.

Now, sunstones do something else, and enemies give exp. There is no super meter anymore. Instead, in some battles that have huge amounts of enemies, a huge sunstone will be on the field and you have a limited time to hit it, which activates your super mode, THEN you can use special moves. Or at least this is what it looks like. I don't know anyway to use them anytime like K1. I don't see the point of a huge, epic battle with tough enemies, only to have super mode pretty much forced on you so you can defeat them all easily. You don't have to touch the crystal though and can just let it break but it's super tough if you do.

There are modes like time attack and score attack if you like the game enough. I don't know what it is that attracts me to this game. It's got something to do with the vibrant colors, and how when you find a hidden treasure and get a gem or gadget part, a full 3D model of it pops up on screen all shiny.

Outside of combat, you have platforming and some light puzzle solving usually revolving around moving blocks, hitting switches, or using one of Knack's other forms. There's some cool stuff here, like his ice form can freeze timed switches, and his metal form and leave line of metal shards behind him which you connect to power sources and trying to find a way to create a path as if you jump the line breaks.

Metal Knack can also shed just the metal and it creates a statue used to activate weighted floor panels.

Another cool aspect is how at any time you can shed all relics and become Knack's original tiny form. You do this to climb small ledges a large Knack couldn't stand on, or to go through vents, gaps etc.

I'm finding a lot of shortcuts and a few skips. Will be uploading a playlist this weekend.

Edit: So Im near the end now and just found a nice skip that is incredibly easy to do.

Theyve made this game so much easier than the first. Health is now regen if you avoid damage for a few seconds. You get smaller because damage knocks off relic parts so the smaller you are, the less capability you have. In K1 you didnt have regen and would just have to deal with it.

If you die enough times during a platforming segment, the game will ask if you want to skip it.

One thing that's really weird is there are all these places where it wants you to change to little Knack, or some tricky platforming segments but a majority of the time you can double jump and hover (think Crash's spin attack) to cover huge distance. Ive even found a trick where switching to little Knack during hover actually gives you more distance and ability to connect with higher ledges.

Sunstones fill a meter that generates a shield. Enemies have to break that before they can really hurt you.

I want to mention the special moves again and how stupid they are. The game has large forced battles but gives you a super crystal so you can just end it instantly. You dont get much time but you become invincible and can blast special moves until the meter runs out. But whats the point if it forces this? K1 had a meter you built and could use a special any time. It depleted a large amount and refilling it took a while.

I've read complaints that the first one was quite hard and I guess it kinda was sometimes but damn, theyve gone overboard with dumbing it down.

So Roy, I noticed on YT you're doing a NUR of Yakuza Kiwami? Isn't that the one you said was really broken? I watched the first video and saw a few examples of enemy super armor and just doing whatever random stuff.

What changed? Did you figure a way to get around the BS?

View user profile

14 Re: What are you playing right now? on Wed Sep 20, 2017 7:54 am

Eh, not really haha! It is still very much so broken but I tend to do handicap runs then too to get a better feel for the game. If you can just spam healing items and broken moves you'll never find what makes the game tick. I'm starting to understand it a bit better now but it is still stupidly stupid.

The biggest consistency I've found is that I have to test each boss to see if the infinite is viable from behind, some can escape it. Then to test which moves I can punish and with which combo and if they can randomly give that move a super-armor counter. It's a lot of testing but sort of 'beating the system' feels really good. I've already used so many exploits in AI I should go to jail for it. Like one is that bosses will auto dodge a lot, but only if the attack is directed at them. So I use the gutpunch on random air/enemies a lot as it has a wide hitbox so that it hits them too - and they won't dodge it then either which is great.

Still I doubt I'll finish the run, but I'm doing my best.

How's Absolver going for you? Or jumped ship to another title already?

If exploiting AI was a crime, you would be serving multiple life sentences HAHAHA.

I'm still playing Absolver. I'm trying to find people that have the moves I want for my build. There's this one kick that I can't remember which area's enemies used it. It might have been another player in pvp. Someone I've fought before offered to teach me some moves so I'll probably get to that on the weekend.

I heard more updates and content is coming for Absolver at some point.

I made a topic for strider(2014). Beat Hotline Miami 2 and played Ruiner for a bit, it's pretty good so far, adore the aesthetic and ost, it's super 80s-90s cyberpunk anime like Akira and cybercity 808 or any other cyberpunk OVA. some of the tracks are by composer Susumu Hirawasa, known for Berserk anime ost and other composers, it's pretty much Hotline Miami with a budget. I'll make a topic soon.

I'm still playing Knack 2. I actually love this game. Need to go through every stage and get medals now which are basically like mission like beating a stage within a time limit, beat the high score, or other little tasks like defeating 5 enemies with one body slam. Lots of stuff like that. For high scores, you get more points the higher the difficulty.

I haven't played bullet witch but I've seen enough to know it's not great, pretty jank and low budget but has its charm. I'll have to play it someday.

I checked the ruiner ost and it seems he did 1 track with lyrics, it's a good track. Gotta sleep now I'll play a bunch of it tomorrow, I'm playing normal first then I'll go to hard.

Great so far, I'm nearly done got a few levels left, it's pretty short so I'll play hard right after.
I'll make a topic soon I want to enjoy it first then start to muck around with it. You have a gun and melee by default and can pick up temporary weapons also, stuff like shotguns, rifles and all sorts of sci-fi weapons of all types to keep things fresh.

Various abilities(dash, slomo, shield, stun nade etc) you can buy and upgrade, many moves can be used in conjunction so it's about mixing them on the fly to deal with various foes, though it could easily make you op I'm sure. It's a damn fun twin stick so far but I can see it's already reusing areas, enemies and bosses, its a budget title so that's expected but the art, ost and gameplay go along way to compensate. Gonna sleep now toodaloo haha.

Bullet Witch has been on my list for a very long time.

I just finished unlocking everything in Knack 2. Quite a bit of stuff to do.

Played a little of Matterfall for the first time. Bought it weeks ago but was too busy to touch it. Im not fully playing it right now, I just wanted to see what it was like and it's quite good. It can be a bit tricky to get used to the controls but I got a handle on them almost immediately. I've seen a few reviews whining about the controls but then they play games like 3 year olds with a controller for the first time.

Only a few days until EW2 so Im not sure what to play. Got Dragon's Dogma DA HD coming in the mail too.

I got Wind Waker HD for $15 new so I'm playing that this weekend. Missed it during the GC days. Looks amazing and the graphics remind me of Okami somewhat. I've seen comparisons made over the years, and there are a few similarities.

I'm not too far yet. Just got the ability to sail and so far it feels like Okami's Ryoshima Coast area, with lots of islands and places you can see in the distance. Gives that same mysterious feel.

Combat is super basic but nothing wrong with it. Nothing compared to Okami though, which has tons of options. I guess people just saw the graphics style and went nuts with the comparisons.

So far it's really good. Combat is average so far.

It's funny, I don't really like the Zelda games at all until they do something weird like Spirit Tracks with the trains and WW with the boat and graphics style.

I don't like how Link controls in certain situations, like when you want to open a treasure box, you have to position yourself precisely. Like if you ran past it, you can't just smoothly turn into it because he can't turn so sharply. It's quite clunky. Also not a fan of how he auto jumps off ledges.

Sailing is fun and really mysterious. I can see these strange towers and shapes in the distance. Sadly I won't be able to play until weekends, but I might just forget the main story and see what's out there.

The game is a bit railroady at the start, and will give you 'you can't go further than this' messages. It really is a kids game in that regard, it really holds the leash on tight until you at least reached the mid point of the game.

I never really got into the Zelda series which I think was more attributed to the fact that I never owned anything Nintendo until years after release, and was never really a Nintendo follower. I started off with a Sega Master System and moved up through each console until Dreamcast, then straight to PS1.

Even though I did get most of the Nintendo stuff much later, I still never got into Zelda. I've played a little of Twilight Princess which I didn't feel anything for, but I really love Spirit Tracks. Don't know why TP didn't do anything for me but I'm open to give it another try when I can find a copy.

I want to get Phantom Hourglass as it has the boat too.

Really loving WW though. Has that same Okami adventuring feel. I've only beat the first boss and sadly I won't be playing much more during the week and I'm actually borrowing the WiiU so that will be over soon.

Zelda games are pretty unique, in that they aren't really good games yet are heralded as the best around. In terms of combat they are extremely lackluster, when it comes down to exploration they aren't the best either, their stories  aren't too amazing.. The dungeons are fun though.

But they were generally ahead of the curve and have amazing art and music, making them stand out. Ocarina pretty much debuting the 3d adventure helped too. But as a game in and of itself it is just a baseline adventure game. This is why Twilight Princess is among the weakest, as it was just Ocarina of Time 2.0 without the impact the original had. It didn't push the envelope at all.

That's how I see them as well and the reason why I only like the ones that have something totally different like the train and boat.

I remember TP also got a lot of Okami comparisons back then due to the wolf form. These comparisons are purely superficial. Okami is far superior to any Zelda game imo.

The next Zelda game I want is A Link Between Worlds for that thing where you can become a painting. Might grab OoT and MM for the 3DS too.

View user profile

39 Re: What are you playing right now? on Mon Nov 20, 2017 7:26 pm

Link Between Worlds is excellent. Completely forgot about that one since I sold my 3DS. Majora's Mask is a great title too, very unique. But also very depressing in terms of design (story, world, setting etc) to the point that I couldn't play it without slowly getting into a depression. I still cannot imagine that Nintendo made that game, it is of the devil.

Skyward Sword is also great once...you get past the first 5-8 hours. And can stomach the 2-10 hours of filler. The dungeons in that game are beyond amazing, but everything surrounding it is absolutely atrocious.

In terms of comparisons, Zelda has a lot of fans that just play Zelda. So they don't look much farther than basics. If a game has a sword and shield, then it is a Zelda-clone in their eyes. Don't fight it, I did...it is not worth it haha.

One big part of its community is now dead sadly, there was a big passion for the timeline. Every game is basically a retelling with some twists, and we (me and a friend even had a full thesis published when we were teens on it) would discuss a lot of facts and nods about it. Nintendo often commented that they didn't ever think of them as one timeline, but the fanbase said it did fit together...somewhat. Eventually they killed it by posting an 'official' timeline which they update frequently now, but this killed the community since the timeline sported a very...bizarre set of events. Suffice to say they chose a timeline specifically because nobody had thought of that one yet.

Skyward swords combat is super basic, directional swipes just mean swipe horizontal or vertical to hit a foe.

If you want legit directional motion control based swordplay check red steel 2, that game is so legit you have to use the wii motion plus to even play it.

I don't want anything to do with motion controls. Few things I hate less.

I though it was button inputs, but then I should have remembered how Nintendo has to shoehorn that crap into every game.

43 Re: What are you playing right now? on Thu Nov 23, 2017 11:57 am

Granted, most games just shoved it in there. The few games that actually implemented it (Red Steel 2, Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime 3) really gave me the feeling motion controls were the future.

Games like Mario Odyssey really force it in though in the worst possible way.

Re6 mechanics are great just not Leon's, Ada's campaigns, those are crap. Chris campaign is the most complete and well designed, Jakes is ok but some of it is bland. I'll make a topic, I'll defend RE6 as its a great action game but most will say it's not RE, not spooky or such blah blah bleh. 7 exists so that's a moot point. It's really unique shooter/brawler hybrid with crazy melee moves, dodge rolls into slides into lying prone shooting(with more rolling like its Max Payne 3), counters(with legit timing) and more gun-fu/king-fu antics.

Also get the PS4 versions, they're all on sale right now, 4-5-6 are bundled and revelations 1-2 also.

Yeah RE6 is a decent action shooter if you ask me. I get the whole 'not RE' thing but I still enjoyed it overall. Not really replayable for me though and I only really liked a few parts of various campaigns.

I liked Leon's beginning because zombies freak me out. Ada was decent for a while, and I like certain parts of Jake and Sherry's story. The one I liked the least was Chris and Piers.

Some cool combat mechanics which Gabriel has already mentioned. I'll throw in quick shot which stuns enemies at the cost of some stamina I believe. I've seen some cool combos with QS and slide.
